Evidence for Universal Credit

Claiming Universal Credit while self-employed? Here’s the evidence they’ll ask for — and how to have it ready in seconds.

the reassuring bit first

Universal Credit & the self-employed

Universal Credit is designed to top up your income in the dry months and step back when the work (and the money) come in. That flexibility is a lifesaver for performers — but it comes with a catch: you have to report and evidence your income and expenses regularly.

Wondering whether Universal Credit itself counts as income on your tax return? That’s a different question — we answer it in Is Universal Credit income?.

what they’ll want to see

The evidence they ask for

As a self-employed claimant you’ll usually need to:

  • Report your income and expenses for each monthly assessment period.
  • Show your records at reviews — the work coach or case manager will want to check the expenses you’ve claimed.
  • Back it up with receipts — they like to actually see the proof behind each expense.
  • Attend in-person meetings, often around every three months, to run through it all together.

Turn up organised, every time

This is where the SansDrama App earns its keep. Because every expense is logged with a photo of the receipt attached, you don’t need to cart around a carrier bag of crumpled paper. At your review you simply open the app, pull up the expense in question and show the receipt right there on screen.

And there’s a quiet advantage to looking on top of things: the more organised and competent you appear, the more smoothly these meetings tend to go.

I joined the Universal Credit scheme for 12 months after a really slow start to the year. It tops up your self-employed income in the dry months, then steps back when you’re earning normally. Reviews happen every three months and they like to see the receipts behind your expenses — so instead of carting round a load of paper, I just bring my iPad and pull up the expense on SansDrama with the photo of the receipt attached. They’ve been really impressed with how efficient I am, and honestly they’re far less grumpy — and far more helpful — when you can prove you’re organised. The app has really helped!

Keep every receipt photo in the app as you go, not the night before a review. Those first 12 months as a new claimant are usually a start-up period — a good window to build the habit while the pressure’s lower.
